Spring Byington (1906)

Another legend who not only appeared at the Historic Elitch Theatre, but she actually got her start acting here…

Spring Byington was born in Colorado Springs in 1893 and at the age of 14 she got her start in acting at the Elitch Theatre. She later returned with touring companies in 1914 and 1915.

In 1934, Byington opened on Broadway in No Questions Asked. She is also known for her more than 100 film roles, including classics such as Little Women (1933) and her Academy Award nominated role in You Can’t Take It with You.

  • Her career included a seven-year run on radio and television as the star of December Bride.
  • Byington received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role as Penelope Sycamore in You Can’t Take It with You (1938).
