Van Johnson was the very definition of the matinee idol of Hollywood’s golden age. With nearly 70 film roles, plus dozens of TV and theatre roles, Johnson provided the boy-next-door charm in countless roles.
At the Historic Elitch Theatre we remember him for this two appearances: 1977’s Send Me No Flowers and 1979’s Boeing-Boeing. (Check out the photo below where he got to celebrate his birthday at the theatre during Send Me No Flowers.)
“On August 25,1977, following his performance in Send Me No Flowers, Van Johnson was confronted with a surprise celebration for his 61st birthday. Denver Mayor Bill McNichols appeared at the Theatre with a band, balloons and champagne.”
Theodore A. Borrillo (Denver’s Historic Elitch Theatre: A Nostalgic Journey.)
