Among the performers who brought both Broadway distinction and television renown to the Historic Elitch Theatre stage, Jan Clayton holds a singular place in the annals of American musical theatre. In the summer of 1962, Clayton served as one of the leading performers for the final five plays of the Elitch season, sharing the stage with Gene Raymond in what was a particularly celebrated chapter in the venue’s storied history. By the time she arrived in Denver, Clayton had already earned her place among the most accomplished musical theatre artists of her generation — a Broadway originator, a television pioneer, and a performer whose voice and presence had graced two of the American stage’s most beloved productions.
Clayton appeared in the role of Julie Jordan in the original 1945 Broadway production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel, opposite John Raitt’s Billy Bigelow. She then left that production to take on Magnolia in the 1946 Broadway revival of Show Boat at the Ziegfeld Theatre, which ran for 418 performances.
Clayton can be heard on the original cast recordings of both Carousel and the 1946 revival of Show Boat. However, millions of Americans came to know her through a different medium entirely: she played the first four seasons of Lassie, as Ellen Miller, a war widow living on her father-in-law’s farm with her preteen son Jeff. Clayton received two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for her performance in Lassie.
Jan Clayton’s appearance at the Historic Elitch Theatre in 1962 was a meeting of two American institutions — a performer who had helped define the golden age of the Broadway musical and a theatre that had spent seven decades nurturing the finest talent the country had to offer.
